READERS PROCEDURE
1. Practice the readings at home, use your Reader Workbook. Please pay particular attention to the pace of your reading. Often times we think we are reading at a normal pace, but our hearers receive the message “too fast.” You can listen to the readings online at http://usccb.org/bible/readings-audio.cfm if you would like to hear them for correct pronunciation.
2. Arrive at Church 20 minutes before the start of mass, go to the sacristy.
3. Check with the Deacon or the Priest regarding special instructions, go out to the Ambo to make sure the Lectionary is open to the correct spot.
4. When there is no Deacon assisting, as reader you will process in carrying the Book of the Gospels. When reaching the foot of the steps, you pause (short pause, do not bow), and then put the Book of Gospels on the stand on the Altar. After the Book of Gospels is in place, you can make you way to a pew. When Deacon Rich is assisting he will carry the Book of the Gospels in the procession, and you will not process in.
5. After the opening prayer as the people are sitting down, the reader moves to the Ambo, bowing to the tabernacle/altar before you move up the steps.
6. Please follow the Lectionary guidelines and wording precisely. Do not change, add or delete anything from the readings, the introduction (A reading from the 7) or the closing (The Word of the Lord).
7. After the First Reading, there is a pause for silence, move back from the Ambo. As the Cantor comes to the Ambo for the Psalm, you move to the side chair.
8. When the Psalm is complete move to the ambo for the 2nd Reading, when the 2nd reading is done, close the book and put it on the shelf of the Ambo, move back from the Ambo. As the music for the Alleluia (or Gospel Acclimation) starts you move to your pew.
9. After the Homily there is a pause for silence and then the Creed. When there is no Deacon assisting, as the creed nears the end, move to the Cantor Stand for the intercessions. The Priest will introduce them. After the intercessions are done, there is a closing prayer done by the Priest—stay at the Cantor Stand until he finishes the prayer, then move to your pew. When there is a Deacon assisting, he will offer the intercessions from the Chair.
10. At the end of Mass, you do not join in the procession out as the Book of Gospels is not carried out in procession.
11. Please dress appropriate when you are scheduled to read.
12. Please keep your scheduled Mass times, or make sure to get a sub.
